BON SOIR, PARIS! LAST OF THE SUMMER RAYS

WHEN THE CRILLON on Place De La Concorde in Paris reopened after lockdown, the hotel adapted quickly to the new normality by offering their guests and VIP visitors exactly what they most wanted – outdoor cocktails and canapés in a laid back setting where they could socialise freely and watch the sun go down with zero pressure given… hence the wraparound 6th floor rooftop terrace with a huge LED ‘BON SOIR PARIS’ sign scrawled across the backdrop, illuminating the silver ice bowls stacked with magnums of rose wine and champagne, and therefore setting the tone for golden hour…

The bar area is actually the terrace of the hotel’s secret penthouse ‘Suite Bernstein’, normally reserved for the most elite of guests, but transformed for the remainder of the summer. I’d been invited to the rooftop three times before I was able to go and see it for myself, and was somehow expecting something more formal – but no, the all-white decor with a dash of colour woven through it is an exquisite blend of Paris and St Tropez, with a hint of Ibiza and Mykonos thrown in for good measure; the Billecart Salmon is chilled, the music chilled, the guests even more so…

The views span across the city and take in Invalides, the Grand Palais and the Iron Lady herself – the Eiffel Tower; watching the lights sparkling through the evening after dusk, for five minutes on the hour every hour, is an enchanting experience, and one that Axel – who was running the rooftop bar on the night I was there – says still gives him tingles, even after seeing it literally hundreds of times…

As you’d expect at THE CRILLON, the service is charming and impeccable; masque-wearing and social distancing rules are strictly in place which leads to long queues at the front door of the hotel, therefore it’s best to book in advance (I didn’t, and insisted on speaking to the General Manager – lol, I’m sure he was thrilled). The rooftop bar is closed over the next few months but the ground floor Bar Les Ambassadeurs, with a vibe based on the street art scene of Paris, has just reopened and is (almost) as good. All of it is unmissable when you’re in the area – check it out.
