ALESSANDRO VERDENELLI: CUPCAKES WITH A TWIST

SUSHI’ and ‘CUPCAKE’ – two very popular search words strung together – and two very harmonious concepts if you look at the result. ‘Sushi Cupcake’ is a casual fine-dining restaurant/cafe in London, SW3, and it was my first stop after being released from the captivity of covid lockdown in the UK; I knew from having been a member of KX gym and spa for seven years – where the owner, Alessandro Verdenelli, had been head chef – that his cuisine is always clean, nutritious and exciting, and that was exactly the type of food I was craving…

It was great to see Alessandro – always friendly and welcoming; it was a baking hot evening in London and the very first thing he suggested to me was a fresh watermelon juice decorated with mint leaves, along with an ‘Aperol Spritz‘ – which ever-so-coincidentally started my preference for that particular cocktail for the remainder of the summer…

The menu at Sushi Cupcake is made up of many classic Asian fusion dishes; however, I left the choice up to Alessandro. First up was ‘Carpaccio of Octopus‘ seasoned with sesame, edamame and katsuobushi (left, below), followed by ‘Hokkaido Sushi Cupcake’ – a combination of salmon, cucumber and edamame on a bed of avocado with a wasabi dressing (below, right)…

For dessert, we had super-light ‘Dorayaki Pancakes’ filled with matcha custard cream (below, left), then finally ‘Adzuki Mochi’ (below, right) – a large Japanese rice cake filled with ‘adzuki bean‘ – a type of sweet jam that looks and takes a little like fig jam…

‘Sushi Cupcake‘ is located in Chelsea Farmer’s Market – most famous for it’s open air pizza restaurants, gelato cafe, organic food store, gardener’s market, nail bar and dog grooming parlour – it’s an all-year-round magnet for locals and visitors alike. The meal was served outside in a courtyard area decorated with charcoal coloured parasols and pots of bamboo; the vibe is zen and the crowd is Chelsea’s most cool and laid back. This is the place to stop off for a light lunch or supper…perfectly balanced healthy cuisine that will make you feel you’ve had an interesting venture into another world!
