THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME…

What’s green, 100% recyclable, won gold at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, is loved by a diverse group of tastemakers including Nusr-Et (Salt-Bae) and the Duchess Of Cornwall, and is all over the nation’s gardens, tennis courts and rooftop terraces? Answer: EASIGRASS! Of all the indoor/outdoor products available, this is probably the most immediately transformative. With the current emphasis on entertaining outside, and the need for restaurateurs to create well delineated and attractive pavement dining areas, Easigrass has had one of it’s busiest years ever, with plans to extend operations multinationally…

Gone are the days when obviously plastic, artificial grass was viewed with condescension and by-passed in favour of the real thing – it’s new, fully recyclability makes it an option for the environmentally conscious amongst us, it looks fantastic, plus it’s simply not practical to lay real grass in some environments therefore it’s often preferred by clients who require a very low maintenance option – for example, those who travel a lot and are often away from home, or live in areas where there’s a regular water deficiency, or those who expect a lot of foot traffic across their outdoor space…

Take a scrubby piece of neglected lawn, have the foundation reworked by Easigrass, then have the professionals in to lay it and pretty much overnight you have a useable, safe space for children to play in or to hold an outside gathering (see two dramatic before-and-after transformations, above); it’s a perfect soft-landing for trampoline and play-swing areas as well. Faux grass now comes in a several different textures named after the best areas of London in which they are frequently used (Belgravia, Chelsea, Kensington, and so on), so the finished appearance blends perfectly with your surroundings – in fact, many renowned landscape gardeners use a mix of both natural and faux grasses and plants to create beautifully manicured gardens for luxury hoteliers and private homes…

If you have the space for it, faux grass is the perfect flooring for an outdoor tennis court, mini golf course by EasiGolf or a putting green (and it can be a temporary installation too). As everyone spends more time at home with their family, purchases of new furnishings and accessories have become necessary – just ask the staff at Andrew Martin, where sales of sofas have rocketed over the past months, or refer to Easianimals – the sister company of Easigrass – which has spent the summer decorating family gardens with adorable animal sculptures that add humour to an otherwise dull area… for example, sheep can be found grazing on an immaculate lawn (above, left), a grass-covered hare stopping to enjoy the lavender in a herb garden (above, right), a life-size giraffe or dinosaur peering through the trees, a statuesque stag guarding the entrance to your beautiful property, a horse behind an ornamental fence or a family of bears picnicking under the children’s tree house…

Situations where I’ve personally seen Easigrass used to best effect include the transformation of the bleak, slightly uneven landscape of a luxury hotel’s concrete rooftop into a secure, uplifting setting for an amazing bar and restaurant with a truly indoor/outdoor vibe; a small enclosed space at a private residence (previously used to store bikes) was lined with Easigrass and immediately it was transformed from ‘utility space’ into an inviting breakfast patio; a boutique hotel used the grass to delineate their area of pavement directly across the street to be used for additional dining space; bears are used by restaurateurs as social-distancing markers; an interior designer used incredibly realistic bespoke Easigrass ‘living wall’ panels (above, left) as an installation in an indoor swimming pool area; a wildlife foundation used a life-sized elephant as it’s statement piece at an event; a catering company used a grass covered pavilion as the bar for a jungle themed party; an events company used Easigrass as the foundation for their Wimbledon-inspired venue…

At Chateau Versailles (above, left), the topiary is clearly real and so are the dolphin topiary I used either side of a private swimming pool on a refurbishment project in the South of France (above, bottom right), however Easianimal faux grass sculptures are an amusing and endearing focal point when used amongst natural elements – for example, the teddy bear family and hippo in the images above. I’ve used faux grass to temporarily line my reception room for an indoor/outdoor ‘garden party’, brides use it to floor wedding marquees (no more damaged, muddy heels); hoteliers use the animals to entertain – pop by to see the Easianimals Christmas bear decor at ‘Hotel Cafe Royal’ in Regent Street, London…

Theme park designers use sculptures as ‘meeters and greeters’ throughout the property, exhibition organisers use Easigrass to dress stands; event planners use them as ‘special guests’ at garden parties (see the bear on a swing, below left). This is a product for an architect, designer or other industry professional who’s looking for vibrant, natural-looking flooring that immediately enhances a neglected space – or for anyone sourcing unique sculptures that’ll transform a residential garden into something special all year round…
