JOHNJAMES BESPOKE: LICENSED TO DRILL

JohnJames Bespoke Kitchens & Joinery was founded in 2019 by partners John Tookey and Jamie Farrimond in order to design and build handmade kitchens and fitted joinery. Based from their workshop on the London/Surrey border, the team primarily cover the areas of London, Surrey, Berkshire, the Chiltern Hills and Sussex, also producing bespoke wardrobes, alcove cabinets and all aspects of fitted joinery for clients who appreciate the timeless, shaker style that they specialise in. Here we talk with Jamie about the process and what the client can expect…

Where the work of JohnJames differentiates from other suppliers is that everything we produce is handmade and fully bespoke; we are responsible for the design, build and installation on all projects as well as being the sole point of contact throughout the process…”

C&B: “Jamie, lead times are often an issue with clients who want everything done ‘yesterday’; how much notice do you generally need on a job?”

JF: “Typically, we need a few months’ notice to accommodate any project; if the kitchen is part of a larger renovation, we’ve been known to start liaising with architects and other tradespeople well in advance to ensure a seamless handover…”

We don’t do a collection of ‘ranges’ – each kitchen and joinery piece is as unique as the client…”

C&B: “And how do you go about costing a project – is that a challenging part when you’re working off-plan?”

JF: “Prospective clients can send us rough measurements and we are then able to provide an estimate; there’s a common misconception that bespoke suddenly increases the cost of a kitchen. We like to think that being bespoke actually gives the client the opportunity to tailor the works to accommodate their specific budget. Once the client is happy to go ahead, we take a 10% deposit to secure the dates…”

We’re seeing green cabinetry increase in popularity – from olive to dark forest tones. Neutral kitchens in grey or cream remain popular and are often paired with bolder tiles or accessories. The incorporation of a pantry has been high on our client’s wish list and we’ve now built several, ranging from a dedicated larder cupboard to spacious walk in rooms…”

C&B: “We can see from your portfolio that you take on some really large and significant work and heard that you’ve got an exciting project lined up next year with the interior designer Lonika Chande; what would you say has been your largest and most demanding project so far?”

JF: “That would be the magnificent Harpsden Court in Henley-on-Thames, a Grade II listed, 13-bedroom property which was the set for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. We first worked with the owners on their London property and were thrilled when they enlisted us to bring their vision for this renovation to life; we handmade and built two kitchens, several wardrobes, the utility room, boot room and the laundry room. The oldest parts of Harpsden Court date back to 1204 so you can imagine the floors weren’t level and the walls far from perfect – there was a lot of scribing to do!”

The beauty of our work is that no two clients are the same. We enjoy working with all types of people, from busy families who want to prioritise sociability and reduce clutter, individuals with book or wine collections they want to display, or keen cooks looking to entertain in a beautiful and unique space…”
