CINCO DE MAYO: BRETT GALLEY

Historically, Cinco de Mayo embodies resilience rather than mere spectacle; in Mexico, it represents a moment of national pride. Celebrations are approached with substance – it’s not solely about margaritas! Instead of resorting to clichéd fiesta tropes, we ground our design in authentic narratives that reflect strength, heritage, and refinement, therefore creating meaningful storytelling experiences. The invitations convey cultural intelligence, restraint, and intention from the very first interaction; options such as fine art, handcrafted, or boxed invitations featuring layered components are particularly fitting. We then integrate genuine elements into the theme, for example, utilising handwoven textiles from Oaxaca as table runners, along with custom ceramics, hand-painted tiles, or artisanal glassware. The colour palette includes deep reds, soft neutrals, and oxidised metals, further enhancing the overall aesthetic…”

Brett Galley is an expert on planning destination events south of the border! Here we celebrate the annual Cinco de Mayo festival by discussing what makes a quintessentially Mexican occasion…

C&B: “Brett – describe the essence of a couple of events your company has recently planned in Mexico…”

BG: “In Mayakoba, we’ve planned mutli-day milestone birthdays that feel like editorial spreads… with one particularly over-the-top 60th that turned into a Riviera Maya fantasy of champagne, candlelight, and just enough chaos to keep it interesting. In San Miguel de Allende, the energy shifted – more romantic, more textured – an intimate wedding held in a historic courtyard, with art-driven celebrations spilling into cobblestone streets. Same country, completely different moods – one being polished coastal glamour, the other a soulful, cinematic theme…”

Traditional Mexican music and dance, when staged literally, feel like entertainment. However, if performed well, they become atmosphere. Live mariachi, a fusion of a live band and DJ, complements Mexican courtyards, terraces, and open-air spaces that naturally amplify live music…”

C&B: “These occasions both sound fantastic and highly memorable – it all starts with location and venue, so which would you say are your most favourite?”

BG: “The Rosewood Mayakoba is our go-to within Mayakoba… private lagoons, standalone villas, and spaces that photograph like an editorial campaign, without us even trying. It’s discreet luxury—nothing screams, everything elegantly ‘whispers’. Also, Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende: This is where things get emotional. The light, the colours, the architecture – it does half the design work for you. Perfect for clients who want something soulful and cinematic, rather than glossy…”

The luxury move is to reinterpret traditional Mexican palettes with restraint, texture, and tone: deep terracotta, creamy ivory, muted cobalt, and oxide red. Mexico doesn’t do timid florals – and that’s exactly why they work so well at a luxury level; the trick is to edit the exuberance without losing the soul. Think marigolds, calla lilies, dahlias, and tuberose…”

C&B: “In terms of cocktails and cuisine, what type of traditional Mexican foods do your chefs include at a celebration to enhance the cultural Mexican experience?”

BG: “Cinco de Mayo is rooted in Puebla, so we lean into signature dishes like mole poblano, chiles en nogada, hand-pressed tacos, and fresh ceviche. The goal isn’t to demonstrate absolutely everything Mexican cuisine can provide; it’s more about strategically emphasising the most quintessential elements of the culture, and beautifully. Cocktails? Everything anchors around tequila and mezcal, treated with the same respect as fine wine or rare Scotch. A refined margarita – a ‘Paloma’ with fresh grapefruit and a salted rim. When guests walk away remembering a single incredible mezcal they’ve never tried before, we’ve done our job…”
