THE LITTLE FLOWER ATELIER

My Valentine’s suggestions are to choose unexpected floral varieties over standard roses, add a personal handwritten note, select a keepsake vessel that the recipient can reuse, prioritise quality over the size of the bouquet, and consider the recipient’s favorite scents and colours rather than generic ‘romantic’ choices. Thoughtful personalisation always outshines extravagance…”

Jill Alexander, The Little Flower Atelier

Jill Alexander, founder of The Little Flower Atelier, a floral design studio based between Yorkshire and Edinburgh, understands that colour is essential to emotional storytelling through florals, particularly on occasions as significant as a Valentine’s Day wedding. In her approach, soft blush and ivory shades evoke feelings of romance and intimacy, while deep burgundies and plums express drama and passion. Jewel tones, such as emerald and sapphire, lend an air of richness and sophistication, whereas vibrant corals and yellows infuse energy and joy into the arrangements.

To create a truly personalised experience, Jill meticulously selects colour palettes that align with the occasion’s mood. This careful curation ranges from the quiet elegance presented by a monochromatic white arrangement to the bold confidence of unexpected combinations. She recognises that the right colours can elevate flowers from mere decoration to powerful emotional experiences that resonate with the moment’s deeper significance.

Initiating her process with a conversation, Jill takes the time to understand the couple’s unique narrative – how they met, the memories they share, their favourite colours and scents, and any symbols of importance in their relationship. This dialogue often inspires her to incorporate florals from a meaningful location or to use colours reminiscent of their first date.

Whether Jill is designing a moody, textured arrangement for someone with an unconventional taste or a soft, garden-inspired piece for a classic love story, every decision – from the chosen palette to the vessel is intentional and tailored – vintage brass compotes, handmade ceramics, or sleek modern glass. To complement the aesthetic of her creations, she incorporates additional elements like silk ribbons, natural linen wraps, handwritten calligraphy notes, beeswax candles, and thoughtfully selected gifts, such as artisan chocolates or premium stationery. Each item is chosen to enrich the overall gifting experience, ensuring that it mirrors the arrangement’s beauty and sentiment…

C&B: “Jill, when it comes to Valentine’s season, which key design elements do you aim to prioritise when creating your luxury floral arrangements?”

JA: “When creating luxury floral arrangements for any romantic occasion, I prioritise texture and depth, layering different varieties of roses, peonies, ranunculus, with softer elements such as garden roses and delicate fillers to create visual richness. I consider colour, harmony, scent, movement and shape. My style leans towards loose, organic arrangements that feel effortless and the key is selecting the finest grade flowers with perfect petals, often choosing seasonal or specialty varieties that elevate the arrangement beyond standard offerings. The goal is creating something that feels both opulent and intimate, luxurious without being ostentatious…”

I believe flowers should tell a story, whether it’s a wedding day or a rare bespoke commission, my approach is always deeply personal, intentional, and rooted in creating unforgettable moments through thoughtful, artful design…”

C&B: “How do you ensure a selection of high-quality and unique flowers in your floral displays and bouquets?”

JA: “I source from trusted growers, prioritise seasonal availability for peak freshness, inspect blooms carefully for perfect condition, and generally varieties that stand apart from standard commercial options. Building strong supplier relationships is very important to me…”

Garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, sweet peas, hellebores, anemones, and lisianthus all convey romance beautifully. Scented blooms like jasmine, tuberose, and lily of the valley add sensory intimacy to our bouquets and installations…”

C&B: “Often a simple bouquet of roses can be viewed as a bit of cliche – have you noticed any recent change in floral themes that resonate with clients looking for something different?”

JA: “Organic luxury – loose, garden-inspired designs with unexpected textures alongside premium blooms. Bold monochromes – dramatic single-colour statements in ivory and chartreuse. Sculptural installations – architectural designs that create immersive experiences. Sustainable luxury – locally-grown, seasonal flowers with eco-conscious practices. The shift is toward personalised, artful designs that feel curated rather than traditional, and these concepts align perfectly with my design philosophy of creating bespoke, nature-inspired arrangements that balance artistic expression with timeless elegance…”
