BO LERAY: PHOTOGRAPHER

The most rewarding aspect of my work is that I get to witness and document one of the happiest days of someone’s life in some of the most beautiful places. The real reward comes when couples see their photos and feel that same joy all over again; I received many messages saying that the photos made them cry. That’s what makes this work so special to me…”

Bo Leray, Destination Wedding Photographer

Bo Leray is an editorial wedding photographer based in the UK, though she frequently travels for projects across Europe and beyond. Her photography seamlessly blends editorial elegance with genuine, in-the-moment emotion, resulting in effortlessly stylish images that still capture the authentic connection between couples. Here we discuss Bo’s inspirations, lighting techniques, favourite destinations, and more…

C&B: “Bo, how did you first begin your journey into wedding photography, and what inspired you to specialise in this field?”

BL: “My love for photography started with fashion magazines. I was obsessed with the way light, movement, and connection told a story through an image. I actually applied for a competition in ELLE Magazine as a teenager, which sparked my fascination with editorial photography. Over time, I realised weddings were the perfect space to merge that stylish, refined aesthetic with real, heartfelt moments. There’s something really special about documenting people in their happiest moments, in the most incredible places, with all the people they love around them. I honestly can’t think of a better job…”

C&B: “How do you describe your style of photography and what sets it apart from other wedding photographers?”

BL: “I’d describe my style as modern editorial with a strong focus on emotion, connection, and movement. My approach is all about creating beautiful, thoughtfully composed images that still feel natural and full of life, nothing stiff or overly posed. I want couples to feel like the best version of themselves, effortless, stylish, and completely in the moment. What sets me apart is how I guide my couples to feel comfortable in front of the camera. It’s not just about taking beautiful photos; it’s about creating an experience where they feel confident and at ease, resulting in imagery that feels genuine and cinematic at the same time…”

My favourite venues in the UK include Hedsor House for its timeless elegance, while Kin House has such a stylish, intimate feel. Abroad, I love Masseria Grieco in Puglia for its rustic charm, Neuendorf House in Mallorca for its sleek, modern design, and Son Bunyola for its stunning coastal views. Each one has incredible light and character – perfect for creating beautiful, natural photos…”

C&B: “How do you approach capturing the unique essence of each couple’s relationship on their wedding day?”

BL: “Every couple has their own energy, their own way of interacting, and I spend time getting to know them so that their personalities shine through in the photos. Some couples are naturally playful and full of laughter, while others have a quiet, intimate connection. I pay attention to those little nuances, how they hold hands, how they look at each other, and use subtle direction to enhance what’s already there, rather than forcing anything that doesn’t feel natural to them…”

C&B: “What challenges do you face when photographing weddings internationally, and how do you overcome them?”

BL: “The biggest challenges are logistics and lighting, but I’m a planner at heart. Before the wedding, I research everything – venue layouts, lighting, travel logistics, even checking Google Earth. I arrive early to scout, adjust to the light, and have backup plans. Working internationally also means adapting to different cultures and vendors, so I always connect with planners beforehand or on the day to keep everything running smoothly…”

C&B: “That sounds very thorough, like you’re prepared for any eventuality!  How do you ensure that you are culturally sensitive and respectful when photographing weddings in different countries?”

BL: “Respecting local customs is incredibly important to me. I always research the traditions and etiquette beforehand, and if I’m unsure, I ask. I also take cues from the couple and their families – understanding what moments hold significance for them ensures that I capture the day in a way that feels meaningful and authentic. Every culture has its own way of celebrating love, and it’s a privilege to document those unique traditions with care and respect…”

C&B: “It sounds like a dream mission – travelling and photographing beautiful people in love! Could you share a memorable experience from a wedding you photographed when you were overseas?”

BL: “A wedding at Masseria Grieco in Puglia stands out – what started with a thunderstorm and grey skies turned into the most beautiful evening. The ceremony had to be pushed back to 5:30pm, but by then, the rain had cleared, and we had an incredible golden sunset for the couple’s portraits. The only adjustment was taking family and wedding party photos after sundown, but with some creative flash work, we turned them into fun, dynamic shots!”

C&B: “That’s a great idea – sometimes improvisation provides the best candid shots. How do you prepare for photographing a wedding on Valentine’s Day, given its significance and popularity?”

BL: “Valentine’s weddings always feel extra romantic! I like to lean into that mood, playing with soft lighting, candlelit details, and finding ways to make the couple’s connection feel even more cinematic. Since it’s a popular date, couples often book well in advance, so I make sure everything is planned down to the last detail. Whether it’s a grand celebration or an intimate elopement, the goal is always to create images that feel timeless and deeply personal…”

C&B: “As your expert in this department, what advice would you give to couples looking to hire a wedding photographer for their destination wedding?”

BL: “First, find a photographer whose style you love, but also someone you genuinely connect with, because they’ll be by your side for the most important moments of the day. Look for experience with destination weddings specifically, as they come with unique challenges like navigating different lighting conditions, working with local vendors, and managing travel logistics. And trust your photographer! The best photos happen when couples feel relaxed and present…”

C&B: “We can understand that! How do you manage your schedule and logistics when you have multiple international weddings in a short timeframe?”

BL: “Planning and efficiency are key! I always build in buffer days between weddings to account for travel delays and give myself time to recharge. I also pack smart, my gear is always carry-on, and I have a streamlined workflow for editing on the go. Communication is crucial, too. I stay in close contact with couples and their planners so that everything runs smoothly…”

C&B: “What role does technology play in your work, from capturing images to post-production?”

BL: “Technology plays a big role in my work. I shoot on mirrorless cameras for flexibility in any lighting and will be incorporating film photography this year for a more organic feel. In post-production, I keep editing clean and natural, and I’ve started using AI tools to streamline the process. Cloud storage and multiple backups ensure everything stays safe…”

C&B: “Besides the increasing use and dependency on AI across the board, how have you seen trends in wedding photography evolve over the years, and how do you adapt to these changes?”

BL: “Wedding photography has moved away from formal posed shots to a much more editorial, storytelling approach, which I love. There’s also been a rise in film photography, flash photography at receptions, and an emphasis on capturing movement and candid energy. I adapt by staying inspired – whether it’s through fashion photography, travel, or my own personal projects…”
