Our team, our ethos, and our commitment to quality set Private Drama Events apart, and one of our most reputable characteristics is our in-house ability to produce original, immersive shows of film and theatre quality…”
Annie Waugh, Company Director, Private Drama Events
Private Drama Events was founded 30 years ago by Adam Blackwood, a visionary who initially embarked on his career as an actor. His early experiences in the world of theatre were profoundly shaped by his time at the Globe Theatre, where he honed his craft under the mentorship of Mark Rylance, a renowned figure in the theatrical community known for his dedication to the preservation of classic works and innovative performances.
Recognising an increasing demand for theatrical experiences that could be enjoyed outside traditional venues, Adam Blackwood set out to create a company that brought the magic of theatre directly into people’s homes and lives. This vision materialised with the founding of Private Drama Events, which began by offering intimate private performances tailored to the desires of individual clients. These unique engagements quickly resonated with audiences, leading to an expansion of the company’s offerings.
As the company grew, Private Drama Events evolved from providing small-scale performances into creating spectacular full-scale circus shows in the Hamptons, combining elements of drama, acrobatics, and breathtaking artistry. This evolution allowed Adam and his team to curate unforgettable experiences that catered to an elite clientele, including extravagant parties held in royal palaces, where the grandeur of the setting complemented the artistic vision of the events.
One of the hallmark achievements of Private Drama Events is the design and execution of 24-hour immersive experiences, notably a remarkable journey aboard the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express traveling from Venice to Paris. This extraordinary event allowed participants to immerse themselves in a unique narrative while enjoying fine dining, theatrical performances, and interactive storytelling, all set against the enchanting backdrop of Europe’s iconic landscapes. Today, Private Drama Events stands as a testament to the original vision – a company that not only celebrates the art of theatre but also seeks to redefine the boundaries of live performance.
Here we meet Company Director Annie Waugh to discuss the unique aspects of Private Drama Events. As the driving force behind the organisation, Annie brings a wealth of experience and a distinctive vision that elevates Private Drama Events in the realm of immersive theatre and entertainment…
C&B: “Annie – your events are directed towards a very sophisticated audience which has often already ‘seen it all’ – what inspires your team when curating something completely different and unexpected?”
AW: “We draw inspiration from each team member’s imagination, personality and lived experiences. Collaboration and an environment which allows for openness are key. When we sit around the table sharing our thoughts and ideas, the magic really starts to happen…”

Our storytelling DNA is definitely becoming more and more recognisable. We often hear of people who are able to detect a ‘Private Drama’ production before they know for sure that it’s ours!”

C&B: “Integrating the cast members personal experiences is guaranteed to create a unique performance. How do you go about incorporating that storytelling into the events?”
AW: “Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do. We spend weeks, if not months, researching and developing narratives and structures that elevate each event into standout, one-of-a-kind productions. From the studio-recorded soundscape to the choice of fabric on a costume, every detail is thought through and chosen for a reason…”
C&B: “The audience must appreciate the effort you go to, incorporating all the tiny details! Can you share a particularly memorable event that you’ve produced over the years?”
AW: “Which to choose?! A recent favourite has got to be a ‘Bridgerton’ themed 21st birthday party. We created an evening of high-society spectacle, complete with drone butterflies flying overhead to a perfect soundscape at the exact moment the birthday girl finished her speech. A gorgeous cast of actors mingled with guests, collecting gossip and hearsay. Then, while everyone was asleep, our writer crafted a bespoke ‘Lady Whistledown’ letter filled with juicy titbits from the night before. This was hand-delivered by our cast at 10 am the next morning. A huge hit amongst the survivors’ feast!”
C&B: “That demonstrates an incredible level of personalisation! What would you say is the most challenging event you’ve had to organise, and how did you overcome the obstacles?”
AW: “An event at The Royal Albert Hall for 5000 global delegates, with a crew of 400 and a cast of 200. It was a beast! However, challenges like that are overcome by having an exceptional team who are confident, experienced and completely aligned with our vision. We always say: “You’re only as strong as your weakest player”. That philosophy guides how we build and run our teams…”

Our bespoke shows and immersive productions are the most requested. Our clients are craving unique experiences they can share with their guests – especially those that lean into interactivity and narrative…”

C&B: “The exclusive performances of Private Drama Events are becoming legendary… you must have seen some amazing venues and locations! Which would you say are your favourites?”
AW: “Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is just jaw-droppingly stunning. I also have a soft spot for Kensington Palace – it’s a true British classic and is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to storytelling. However, my top choice just has to be the Venice-Simplon-Orient Express. It’s iconic…”

Since the popularity boom of series such as ‘The Traitors’ and murder mystery films, demand for these themes has grown, however each show we produce is completely original and tailored specifically to the client or company…”

C&B: “Final question, Annie – what have the next few years got in store, and which Private Drama concepts do you think will be most popular going into 2026?”
AW: “We’ve just secured a record-breaking contract for 2026, which is a significant milestone for us. Over the next three years, we’ll be focusing on scaling our global reach and continuing to create unforgettable moments for clients with big visions and bold ideas. Additionally, as a devoted follower of ‘Yellowstone’, I’m patiently awaiting the arrival of an American family ranch murder mystery inquiry!”
