THOMAS RABOTEUR, FRANCE & ITALY

What truly makes a wedding photo memorable is the emotion captured – an authentic moment between the couple, a shared glance, or a spontaneous gesture can turn a simple photo into an unforgettable memory. Also, thoughtful composition and attention to detail help elevate these precious moments…”

Thomas Raboteur is a photographer specialising in wedding imagery for international clients planning their celebrations in France or Italy. He’s very well-versed in the practicalities of producing sensational photographs taken at any one of the breathtaking venues located in these two countries. Here, we discuss how to achieve the perfect memories for bride and groom…

C&B: “Thomas, you live and work in a stunningly beautiful part of the world – what drew you to the wedding photography industry, especially in France and Italy?”

TR: “I love photography and France and Italy both gave me the opportunity to capture intimate and unique moments in incredibly beautiful locations. Both countries are known for their stunning architecture, romantic landscapes, and natural light, which create a magical atmosphere for weddings. Additionally, I love working with couples who seek a high-end, authentic experience which allows me to showcase both their story and the beauty of the setting…”

C&B: “How do you approach capturing the unique essence of each couple’s love story?”

TR: “I take time to understand their personalities, their journey, and what makes their relationship special. Every couple has their own dynamic, and I aim to reflect that through my photography. Whether it’s through candid moments, intimate gestures, or carefully composed shots, I focus on creating images that truly resonate with them. I also pay close attention to the setting and how it complements their story, ensuring that every detail enhances the emotion and connection they share…”

C&B: “Which are some of your favourite locations in France and Italy for wedding photography?”

TR: “In France, some of my favourite locations for wedding photography are Paris, where I particularly enjoy doing couple sessions, as well as the Loire Valley with its stunning châteaux, and the French Riviera, whose Mediterranean blue inspires me a lot. In Italy, I have a deep love for Rome, Puglia, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri. These places represent the essence of luxury, simplicity, and the iconic Italian dolce vita, which are central to my work. Slim Aarons, a photographer who inspires me greatly, has captured many images in these locations, and I strive to approach his style in my own photography…”

C&B: “Do you have any special insider tips for couples planning a wedding in Italy or France?”

TR: “I recommend choosing a venue that reflects their style and the atmosphere they want to create. Both countries offer stunning settings, from castles to villas and beautiful natural landscapes. It’s important to work with local vendors who know the area well and can manage the logistical details. Finally, I suggest allowing extra time to enjoy the location and capture authentic moments, whether before or after the wedding…”

C&B: “You’ve produced some amazing work around Ravello; can you share with us what makes that location so special to you as a wedding photographer?”

TR: “Ravello holds a special place in my heart because of its breathtaking views, charming atmosphere, and timeless elegance. Perched high above the Amalfi Coast, the town offers stunning, unmatched panoramas. Its intimate gardens, historic villas, and serene ambiance create the perfect setting for capturing romantic and elegant weddings. Every corner of Ravello feels like it was made for love stories, and photographing weddings there allows me to blend the beauty of the location with the personal moments of the couples I work with…”

C&B: “Italy is always beautiful, however when is your favourite time of year to photograph weddings there, and why?”

TR: “Summer; the light is absolutely stunning, with long days and golden sunsets that create a magical atmosphere. Summer also brings out the vibrant colors of the Italian landscapes, whether it’s the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, or Puglia, with their signature dolce vita vibe. It allows me to capture photos that showcase the full beauty and elegance of these locations…”

I handle all the logistics from A-Z for a destination wedding: travel, flights, accommodations, and coordination with local vendors. I believe it’s absolutely not my clients’ responsibility to manage these details. My goal is for them to focus solely on their special days without worrying about the practical aspects…”

C&B: “Do you ever find yourself working with couples who may not be too used to being in front of the camera?”

TR: “When I work with couples who aren’t comfortable in front of the camera, I focus on creating a relaxed, pressure-free atmosphere. I take the time to reassure them and explain that the goal is to capture authentic moments rather than stiff poses. I often encourage natural, spontaneous interactions between them. What they often don’t realise is that half of the couples they see in my portfolio also started off feeling uncomfortable, but you’d never know it from the photos! My approach is to gently guide them while allowing them to be themselves, so their true connection shines through in the images.”

I take time to understand the aesthetic and atmosphere the couple wants to create; if a wedding is more classic and elegant, I focus on refined and timeless compositions. For more relaxed weddings, I emphasise capturing spontaneous and natural moments. My goal is to reflect the unique energy of each event while staying true to my style…”

C&B: “How do you ensure that you capture both candid and posed moments throughout the day?”

TR: “To ensure I capture both posed and candid moments throughout the day, I plan in advance with the couple the key moments where posed photos are desired, such as couple portraits or family shots. Once those moments are covered, I stay discreet and attentive, ready to capture spontaneous and natural scenes, whether it’s bursts of laughter, tender gestures, or interactions between guests. My approach is to be present and guide when needed, but also step back and let moments unfold naturally. This allows me to strike a perfect balance between posed and authentic shots…”

C&B: “Can you describe a particularly memorable wedding experience you’ve had?”

TR: “A strong memory for me was at a location in Paris, in the late afternoon, with the most beautiful light filling the space; the breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower added an unmatched romantic touch. What made this wedding unforgettable was the elegance and simplicity of the ceremony, despite the iconic setting. The couple exchanged their vows surrounded by a small group of close friends, and every moment was filled with sincerity and connection. Capturing these moments in such a stunning location, with that incredible light, was a truly magical experience for both them and me…”
