My background spans portrait, fashion, and beauty photography, but I found my true calling in weddings, where I can combine my love for storytelling, people, and meaningful moments…”
Laura Rose, Wedding Photographer
Laura Rose is a wedding and editorial photographer based in New York. In this discussion, we explore the attributes that constitute high quality imagery, the essential qualities of an exceptional wedding photographer, and Laura’s favourite locations around the world…
C&B: “Laura, we love your images that perfectly capture the highlights of the couples’ big day. What led you to pursue a career in wedding photography, and what keeps you motivated in this field?”
LR: “After years of photographing headshots and editorials, I felt a pull toward something more personal and meaningful. Weddings allow me to capture beauty in its most authentic form – real emotions and the deep connections between people. What keeps me inspired is the uniqueness of each couple’s story and the challenge of capturing images that feel true to each couple. I also feel that photographing weddings perfectly blends the photography skills that I’ve developed over the years!”

Recently I’ve seen a shift toward more editorial and candid imagery, with couples wanting a mix of more organic moments. Direct flash, motion blur and tilted frames have also gained popularity…”

C&B: “Every photographer has their own style – how would you define yours and what techniques do you use to ensure your work stands out?”
LR: “My style is a blend of editorial and documentary storytelling; I aim to create images that are both timeless and emotionally resonant. I focus on light, composition, and movement while allowing moments to unfold naturally. My background in fashion and portraiture also influences the way I frame my subjects and use light…”

C&B: “Can you share a particularly memorable experience you’ve had while photographing a wedding, either domestically or internationally?”
LR: “Honestly, I find that each wedding encompasses some memorable experience. While I could recount instances of unpredictable weather, particularly during outdoor ceremonies or receptions, my favourite moments are often the quiet or unexpected ones. These moments may occur between a family member or the couple themselves. I develop a strong bond with my couples, allowing me to feel deeply connected to their emotions throughout the day.”

At the heart of my work is the desire to create something meaningful and lasting. No two weddings are the same, and I approach each one with fresh eyes, deep care, and a commitment to telling each couples story in the most authentic way possible. I’m incredibly lucky that my passion also happens to be my job…”

C&B: “One of the perks of being a wedding photographer is the opportunity to travel – what considerations do you find you have to take into account when preparing for a wedding shoot in a different country – do you ever worry about having to be somewhere at a certain time or your equipment getting held up at customs?”
LR: “My work often takes me to beautiful places around the world and destination weddings do require thoughtful planning – both logistically and creatively. I thoroughly research the location, considering factors like lighting conditions, cultural customs, and any necessary permits. I also build extra time into the schedule for scouting, ensuring I’m familiar with the best locations before the wedding day. Clear communication with the couple is a priority, so their vision is fully realised in what may be an unfamiliar setting. Additionally, I stay mindful of travel restrictions, including potential red flags for carrying extensive camera equipment through customs. One of the most important considerations for me is arriving early enough to account for any unexpected travel delays. This ensures that not only am I there in time to photograph the wedding, but I also have ample time to scout and prepare…”

I find that travel is incredibly inspiring and definitely feeds my work. While I love being rooted in New York, destination weddings allow me to constantly evolve as an artist and storyteller…”

C&B: “Of all the beautiful locations you’ve visited when shooting weddings, which are your most favourite venues?”
LR: “I’m drawn to venues with a rich sense of history and beautiful architecture, and I find endless inspiration in travel. Some of my favourite East Coast venues include Windridge Estate, Inns of Aurora, The Ocean House, Cairnwood Estate, and the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens – each offer a unique blend of charm, elegance, and is positioned in stunning surroundings…”

I love photographing in Europe, with Villa Corsini, just south of Florence, being a particular favourite. Its breathtaking gardens, exquisite interiors, and panoramic views of Tuscany create an unforgettable backdrop for any celebration…”

C&B: “In your experience, what are some key factors couples should look for when choosing a wedding photographer such as yourself?”
LR: “Beyond loving a photographer’s work, couples should feel a genuine connection with them. Your photographer is with you throughout the day, so it’s important to feel comfortable and understood. Experience in handling different lighting, locations, and high-pressure moments is also crucial. I always recommend that couples ask to see full galleries, not just highlights, to ensure the photographer can handle a variety of lighting situations and deliver the level of consistency and variety they’re looking for…”
